Who’s Firing summarizes weekly research of companies announcing and rumoring layoffs for the week ended 11-12-10.

For the past week pharmaceutical, biotech, insurance, technology, defense and health care employers announced the largest layoffs.

This information is intended for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers and others who are interested in companies that are contracting. The information can be valuable to job seekers also, to understand companies that are probably not in growth mode.

Top Layoffs week ended 11-12:

Pharmaceuticals topped the list, as Express Scripts announced 1,000 layoffs, moving the work to less expensive facilities after a union contract expires and as a separate union contract negotiations may fail. Biotech company Genzyme cut 1,000 staff at several locations to cut costs and protect itself against takeover by French company Sanofi-Aventis SA.

Insurance was next as Health Net of the Northeast announced it would layoff 750 Shelton CT employees to prepare for dropped Connecticut coverage and ING will drop 400 employees throughout the US as it prepares to take its US insurance unit public. It was reported that technology company Yahoo will cut 650 employees in its product division while IBM is laying off 299 employees across the US.

Defense company Northrup Grumman is trimming 380 workers in its Newport News VA shipbuilding facility. Finally, health care wasn’t spared this week as Cleveland Clinic is cutting 200 employees and Aurora Health Care laid off 175 workers in southern Wisconsin.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 11/8/10.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
