Who’s Firing summarizes weekly research of companies announcing and rumoring layoffs for the week ended 3-4-11.

For the past week business service, distribution, defense, government and food processing employers announced the largest layoffs.

This information is intended for business analysts, corporate strategists, marketers, salespeople, investment analysts, financial advisers and others who are interested in companies that are contracting. The information can be valuable to job seekers also, to understand companies that are probably not in growth mode.

Top Layoffs week ended 3-4:

Business Service topped the list, as it was reported that IBM is laying off another 612 workers nationally as a part of continued restructuring and Teleperformance is cutting 250 staff in Augusta GA. Distribution company Schenck Co was next as it announced layoffs of 528 central FL employees after it was acquired by Reyes Beverage Group.

Defense contractor L-3 Services cut 528 Eatontown NJ staff in response to the closing of Fort Monmouth and Northrup-Grumman announced layoffs of 430 Maryland employees as defense spending slowed. Government and school districts also announce layoffs – San Fransisco United School District shed 400+ employees and The City of Patterson NJ cut 267 workers.

Food processor Nestle Healthcare Nutrition is cutting 243 workers as the company shuts down its St. Louis Park MN facility.

Inclusion on this listing doesn’t mean the entire industry is down, as some from the same sectors appeared on the “Who’s Hiring” article published 2/28/11.

Job seekers: You might want to look in greener pastures than these companies.
