It’s Not Your Fault That Hiring Is Dysfunctional

It’s not your fault that hiring is dysfunctional – How could it be your fault?

However, it is your fault that you haven’t found your next job.

It’s not the economy’s fault, it’s not your ex-boss’ fault or your last company, it’s not hiring managers’ fault, or HR reps, or recruiters’ fault. It’s not President Obama’s fault, not Congress’ fault, nor the Federal Reserve, nor the banking system or real estate industry’s fault.

It’s your fault – look at it, recognize it, own it. Blaming someone else won’t find you a job, but owning the responsibility for finding your next job is a start in the right direction.

Because there’s only one person on earth whose job is to find you a job … and that’s you.

But you say “How can I find a job in this economy” or “No one will hire me because of a) my age, b) an employment gap, c) because I’m moving cities/states, d) because my industry is in downturn, e) because I’m in management, or e) a million other excuses why you can’t find a job.”

But the underlying reason you can’t find a job … is because you haven’t figured out how to make the dysfunction of the hiring process work in your favor.

While the dysfunction isn’t your fault – not doing anything about that dysfunction is is your fault.

So … What Can You Do About It?

Plenty …

But little of this is what you’ve been used to in job search. As organizational hiring practices have radically changed, job search strategies must also radically change in order to be successful.

Why are your current job search tactics leaving you unprepared for a radically changed job search?

  1. Most of what you learned about job search was in College/Grad school: Your placement office taught you how to write a resume to be published in a book of resumes … that the placement office sells to employers. If you aren’t planning to publish your resume in a resume book (and who is?), then your how your audience reads your resume has changed.
  2. You were taught how to search during job excesses/candidate shortages: The reason why you were taught random job search tactics, was because you were taught to pick “low hanging fruit”. During times of candidate shortages, there’s lots of low hanging fruit, but virtually none today.
  3. Competition: Competition has exploded since 2000, when CareerBuilder and Monster transformed job search. As job boards, online ads, and resumes posted on job boards have all increased 10 times over the past few years (per – your competition is approximately 10 times larger than your last job search.
  4. Employer automation: When it becomes so easy to apply online that it just takes a second to press “submit”, nothing prevents unqualified candidates from applying. Employers (even small employers) use automation so they concentrate on candidates that meet minimum requirements. Small employers and non-profits can now get Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) for free (, subscribe to inexpensive ATS systems for under $100/month, or even use features built into Microsoft Office to pre-screen resumes – just like large companies.
  5. Changing technology: You may have been taught before the internet, Google, and Social Media transformed job search. If you’re not using these to your advantage and constantly adapting your search to continuing evolution of these technologies, you’re missing a huge opportunity to take advantage of this dysfunction. You have competitors who are advanced in their use of new and changing technology – So are employers.
