How Much Of Your Job Search Time Is Spent On Job Boards?

During my complimentary Resume Revolution! webinar ( http://ResumeWebinar.com ), I take participant polls to learn more about how you are actually searching for jobs.

One poll that I take asks how much of your job search time is spent on job boards.

The poll results aren’t all that shocking – most candidates spend the majority of your job search time on job boards. I’ll share the results, but first I want to ask why you spend so much time on job boards?

Let me point out a major contradiction: A recent CareerBuilder study reported that only 10% of new hires are found from job boards, while 80% of new hires were people the hiring manager already knew. Think about this statement, published by the world’s BIGGEST JOB BOARD – they were proud of this 10% figure.

Since each advertised job attracts an average 1,000 applicants (small companies get about 1/2 of this number), this means that applying for a job on a job board gives you and the rest of the thousand competitors a combined 10% chance that any of you will get that job. That’s a 1/10,000th chance … scary odds, isn’t it?

Do you like these odds? Would you bet much money or invest much time for a 1:10,000 odds?

So you’d think that job seekers wouldn’t bet their career on these odds, right?

Back to that poll …

When asked what percentage of your time is spent on job boards:

  • 2/3 of respondents spend more than 50% of your job search time on job boards
  • About 10% of respondents spend less than 10% of your job search time on job boards

So let’s review:

  • Job board applicants have a 1/10,000th chance of getting the job you’ve applied to
  • 2/3 of respondents spend more than 50% of your job search time on job boards

Can you see the problems with this approach?

I think the reason so many of you spend so much time on job boards, is that you don’t know another way. While common advice is to network to get a job, most of you don’t know hiring managers and don’t know people who work at their target companies.

You don’t know another way because you don’t know effective ways to expand personal networks that will lead to job opportunities. You’ve found that going to networking events and meeting random people just isn’t an effective way to find decision makers in your target companies – because it’s random.
