It used to be, the best way to get interviews was to bypass HR.

Then things changed, making it more difficult.

You used to be able to get a “guaranteed” interview, just by having anyone at the company pass your resume to the hiring manager. It didn’t matter where they worked in the company … a janitor could get you an interview.

The only problem is, most candidates still conduct job searches like the guaranteed interview still exists.

Here’s what most of you do. When your resume is in good shape, you email it to everyone on your contact list – asking the recipient to pass it to the hiring manager or let you know about opportunities at the recipient’s company.

Sound familiar?

This used to get you all the interviews you needed, because employers used to have unwritten policies that they’d interview any candidate who was recommended by an employee.

Getting around HR is still the best way to get interviews (and jobs) … but today it’s much harder to pull off.

The same tactics of emailing all of your contacts isn’t effective today. You can thank your friendly Federal government for making your job search tougher.

Thank the brilliant folks who came up with the Patriot Act. Yep, the same legislation that requires employers to take copies of your passport, Social Security card, or green card, proving that you have the right to work in the US.

The Patriot Act gave the Department of Labor the power to audit businesses of all sizes – not just to make sure they were keeping copies of Passports, Social Security cards and green cards. DOL auditors check to see if businesses are in compliance with all Federal labor laws … including fair hiring.

In addition, the Patriot Act gave the DOL teeth – the ability to shut down and federally appropriate businesses that fail these compliance audits.

How does this affect your job search?

Employers realized that there was a massive loophole in most hiring processes – the guaranteed interview. Guaranteed interview policies caused nearly 50% of all resumes to come through employees – bypassing HR and objective hiring practices … Applicant Tracking Systems.

How could a company demonstrate fair hiring practices to Department of Labor auditors if 50% of applicants bypassed the Applicant Tracking System? If 50% of applicants came through employees in search of guaranteed interviews, getting around the objective criteria from keyword searches, how could an employer demonstrate they were in compliance with Federal hiring laws?

They couldn’t.

So, most employers changed policies to assure the employer could pass these random, surprise labor audits. While these laws were intended to force employers to hire employees based on objective criteria, they had the unintended effects of making hiring processes more difficult.

These laws made it extremely difficult to get around HR. In the process, they made the job search strategies that you (and nearly everyone) uses .. obsolete.

What works today?

There have always been other loopholes. Very few people used them, because of the giant, easy loophole of the guaranteed interview.

Together, these remaining loopholes are called the hidden job market. Learn more about how to find and exploit these remaining loopholes in my Resume Revolution webinar .
