Wow … What a defeatist attitude. This reader wants to blame everyone else for their job search problems.

I guess it’s easier than taking accountability for your own job search, whether it’s a success or failure.

But it’s a typical attitude.

And this attitude even makes sense … if you use traditional job search methods.

If you’re depending on traditional job search, you’re searching in the exact same way as everyone else, so the only difference between your search and everyone else’s is luck.

Have superior information: How can you show employers that you’ve already solved similar problems to the ones they face … if you don’t know what problems your target hiring manager is trying to solve? Superior information doesn’t come from Google (if it’s on Google, it’s public information and it’s old info). Superior information only comes from one place … inside your target company.   4. Understand the hiring process: This is more than just getting an organization chart (though that’s a nice start). To truely understand the hiring process, you need to talk to everyone involved in the process, even influencers, to understand each individual’s goals, problems and needs.   5. Stop branding yourself as a commodity: Just about everything you were taught about resume writing taught you how to brand yourself as a commodity … to look like everyone else. This worked when there was a shortage of qualified candidates, but now there’s a shortage of jobs, commodities compete on price. Since you probably don’t want to win the job because you’re the cheapest candidate, today you need to do the opposite of branding yourself as a commodity.
